Writing can be a very pleasurable endeavor, whether you write in a journal or for publication, and I’ve been doing it for decades. Much of my initial working life involved writing for trade publications; Publishers Weekly was one. I wrote about bookselling, and interviewed famous authors (Isaac Asimov, Arthur Hailey, John Lennon & Yoko). Yes, you can find my interview with many of them online. I laid out pages and gobbled down the delicious luxuries at press events.

Speaking of gobbling, James Beard was at one of the events. He was enormous in every way; very tall and quite obese. I believe that of these press events was for frozen foods, but the best was at the Russian Embassy in D.C. for the publication of a Time series of beautiful cookbooks.

It was great, but it wasn’t what I had in mind. I wanted to be independent and to write for myself and get published. I continued to pursue a psychology doctorate at night, graduated, got licensed, and began a professional career, leaving publishing and working full-time in hospitals, research, and private practice. It was key to allowing me to write in my leisure time while I still earned a living, but not from publishing…
