The Little, Loving Octopus That Could Win Your Heart

Touching relationships between humans and animals usually center around dogs, cats, wildlife, and, occasionally, birds, but never sea creatures like this one. The film deserved an Oscar, and you need to see it.

The sea, we are told by specialists in evolution, is where we originated, and, in many ways, it is in our life’s blood. In fact, seawater is very similar to blood in its composition, so there is a biological connection.

But we never give much thought to sea creatures unless it’s whales or porpoises — animals that seem to have human qualities. What about the octopus, and that’s where “My Octopus Teacher,” the Oscar-award-winning documentary, takes us to new depths of understanding.

For many of us, an octopus has been depicted in two ways; a treacherous creature that ruins seafaring ships or food. Think Kraken, and you understand. Never do we think of an octopus as a sentient creature capable of a relationship with a human.

Please review all the drawings of dangerous sea creatures with tentacles wrapped around ships, their sharp beaks at the ready-to-destroy sailors. Science fiction is busy keeping that myth alive, and so are some…
