“Super Kids” Viewed as Survivors in Distressing Situations
Again, the concept of “super kids,” aka resilient kids, and what factors best serve children in stressful future situations are being examined.
The future holds uncertainty in a time when certainty is proving to be an elusive idea, and for our children, it will require more than adequate schooling, clothing, healthcare, and food—it will require resilience.
Are we preparing the kids for the world to come, or are we acquiescing to the idea that “they’ll get it” when it comes and know what to do? Couch potato mentality will not do, and the time is here and, perhaps, more than here to begin them on their future journeys. Organizations and experts in child development are weighing in and providing some guidance for those willing to prepare their kids, even if it means giving up a bit of control or exposing them to potential mini-dangers.
We used to hear about helicopter moms who were ever-vigilant to push their children to achieve in order to be admitted to prestigious schools and then go on to admirable careers. But in that pursuit, these moms may have been blind to their lack of attention to resilience and how to achieve it.
