I'm sorry that you've had such distressing illnesses in your family. You're correct in taking the actions you did. Most people don't know that Freud died as a result of mouth cancer caused by smoking up to 20 small, black cigars a day. He had over 14 surgeries that disfigured his face, too. It's a horrible disease and we all need to do everything we can do to avoid it. Good for you. You're doing the right thing. Be well.
