Get an Advanced Degree, Drown in Debt and Have No Career?

Careers depend on degrees, sometimes advanced degrees, but what happens when what a student was led to believe no longer meshes with reality?

Currently, in the United States, student loan borrowers owe in the neighborhood of $1.75 trillion in federal and private student loans. The situation is dire and student loan debt has reached the point where it appears students are unable to repay these loans. Some graduates have said their debt will only be paid upon their death. Imagine the stress they and their families are experiencing as they watch this mounting debt.

President Biden signed executive orders providing relief for approximately 20 million former students with loan forgiveness as high as $20,000 per student. When we consider that some students, especially those in medical school, will graduate with loans in excess of $80-300,000, the amount of aid for loans is a drop in the bucket. But there is another consideration, one which is not adequately discussed and which exacerbates the student enrollment and loan problems and, in fact, student existence; careers.

Consider which post-secondary education programs receive the highest number of new students. Statistics show that 1 million are in associate's degrees and 2 million are in bachelor's degrees. The areas in which students are majoring…
