Drugs for Obesity Fail in Patient Adherence Despite Other Benefits
GLP-1 drugs for obesity seemed to be the answer to one of the major problems in healthcare today—obesity, but research tells a different story.
A persistent health issue is at the heart of changes in healthcare that may bring incredible results, but that will only result in more questions than can be answered. I'm referring to obesity, a significant health concern worldwide and which many people, either on their own or with a professional, are attempting to resolve, but that has as yet remained as it is.
Obesity remains a serious medical disorder that brings on multiple other medical issues and it needs to be effectively treated. How did these new weight loss drugs do their work?
The drugs work primarily through appetite suppression. While the majority were first created to treat type 2 diabetes, Wegovy was the first medication licensed for weight control since 2014. It was approved in June 2021. Wegovy and Ozempic, two diabetes medications that had been frequently prescribed off-label for weight loss, have an active ingredient called semaglutide, which works by mimicking a hormone released by the intestines after meals to make you feel full.
