Audiobooks Are Selling But the Crazy Production Costs Could Be Deadly

The audiobook market grows daily and is highly attractive for authors, but production costs could make it out of most authors’ reach.

The audiobook market is growing rapidly, and it is only going to grab a bitter share of the pie in the coming decade. Current estimates are that it is about $5.3 billion currently and will grow to $35 billion in 2030. The lure of audiobooks, which enable listeners to do other activities while listening to stories or books, is undeniable. The advocates of audiobooks aren’t shy about why they find them so interesting and why it’s even better than reading a book.

Audiobooks can supply drama where reading fails this test. Having a voice gives the book character and emphasis, which you wouldn’t have enjoyed in that aspect of reading before. They bring books to a new level, and that can’t be denied. But what about the authors who want to enter this new market?

Authors no longer need to totally produce their audiobooks (voice-over, microphones, software, studios, etc.) because the tide is turning.
